Running has become my favorite hobby. I started running to keep my weight in check. As I’ve aged, it seems it’s harder these days to keep my cloths fitting properly. The running started training for Rocket City Marathon in Huntsville, AL. I moved to Huntsville, AL. after the economic slow down in 2008 and 2009. Huntsville has a job market that fluctuates less than other markets due the the reliance on department of defense contracts.
While working at Avocent, a local company that had just been acquired by Emerson Network and Power (ENP), I learned from my immediate manager that working out was at as important as my career. At first I didn’t get it, but soon I started to understand. My manager was training for triathlons. Our company middle management was wise and understood that our health was important and allowed us some flexibility to workout at a local gym over lunch. In fact, many of our lunch time runs we all (management and resources) all ran together.
Over the next 2-3 years, we all did our best to be consistent with our training. My manager balanced running, swimming and riding to prepare for an Ironman. Other folks just concentrated on setting PRs (personal records) at local races. The distances varied depending on our training. Ultimately, I did achieve a PR on my marathon. (3 hours and 29 minutes and 53 seconds at Rocket City Marathon 2012) I wasn’t sure what was next when my co-worker asked me if I wanted to run Mt. Cheaha 50k with him. At first, I cringed at the thought. 31 miles! No way. But, due to the peer pressure, I registered for the race.
Turns out that my co-worker decided not to the race. He wasn’t able to get in the amount of training he needed to be ready for the race. I followed through with the race and I had a blast. That’s how it all started. From that point, Feb 2013 until now, I’m pretty much a ultra runner.
